Questions & answers

Straight answers about window film: what it costs, what it looks like, how it's fitted and how long it lasts.

Bright room with tall windows looking onto trees

General

How much does window tinting cost?

It depends on the film, how many panes there are, their size and how easy they are to reach. Send us photos or a short video of your windows, with rough sizes if you have them, and we'll give you a fixed written price per window. You know exactly what you're paying before anything is fitted.

Will it make my rooms dark?

Only if you want it to. Spectrally selective film cuts a lot of heat while staying close to clear. The darker shades are for glare and privacy, and we'll talk you through how each shade will look before you choose.

Is window film fitted inside or outside?

Almost always inside, where it's protected from the weather and lasts longest. External films exist for glass we can't reach from inside, and we'll tell you if that's the better option.

How long does window film last?

Interior films from the major manufacturers are made to last many years when they're fitted properly and looked after.

How long does fitting take?

Most homes are a morning or a day, depending on how many windows there are. Bigger commercial jobs are planned in sections so the building can keep running.

Why does the film look hazy after fitting?

Film goes on with a slip solution, and a little moisture stays behind while it cures. A slight haze or small water pockets for the first few weeks is normal and clears as it dries. Leave it 30 days before cleaning.

How do I look after it?

Leave it 30 days to settle, then clean with a soft cloth and a drop of washing-up liquid in water. No scourers, blades or ammonia-based cleaners.

Can you remove old window film?

Yes. Old film that's bubbling, peeling or gone purple can be stripped and the glass cleaned before new film goes on.

Can I get a quote from photos?

Yes, that's how we quote. Send photos or a short video of each window through the quote form or on WhatsApp, with rough sizes if you have them. We check your glass from what you send and come back with a fixed written quote.

Do you need to visit to give a quote?

No. We do virtual surveys: you send photos or a short video of the windows and we quote from those. We only come out to fit. If we need a closer look at anything, like the stamp in the corner of the glass, we'll ask for another photo.

Will window film affect my Wi-Fi or phone signal?

Most films won't make any noticeable difference. Some metallised reflective films can reduce mobile signal slightly through the glass. If that matters to you, we'll recommend a non-metallised film.

Can window film be removed later?

Yes. Film can be removed cleanly without damaging the glass, which also makes it a good option for renters, with the landlord's agreement.

Are you VAT registered?

Yes. All quotes and invoices show VAT clearly, and businesses get a proper VAT invoice for every job.

Homes

Is window film safe on double glazing?

On most units, yes. Some film and glass combinations put extra heat stress on the glass, so we check what glass you have before we quote and only fit film that suits it.

Can people see in at night?

Mirrored and tinted films give privacy in daylight because it's brighter outside than in. At night with your lights on, that flips. If you need privacy round the clock, go frosted.

Will film help in my conservatory?

Yes. Solar control film on conservatory glass takes out much of the heat and glare, so the room is usable through summer. For polycarbonate roofs we'll talk you through the options.

Do I need planning permission for window film?

Film fitted inside your windows doesn't usually need planning permission. If your home is listed or in a conservation area with restrictions, check with your council before making changes, film included.

Can you fit film to self-cleaning glass?

Self-cleaning coatings are on the outside of the glass, and most film is fitted on the inside, so it's usually fine. We check your glass before we quote to make sure the film suits it.

Can you put film on skylights?

Yes. Skylights, roof windows and glass roofs let in a lot of direct overhead sun, so they're some of the most common jobs. Film goes on the inside of the glass, so most flat and pitched skylights can be done as long as we can reach them safely. Send us a photo from underneath and we'll quote from that. See our skylight film page.

Business

Can you fit outside opening hours?

Yes. We can work early, late or section by section so the place keeps running.

What is Regulation 14?

Regulation 14 of the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 covers glazing in workplaces. Glass in doors, partitions and low-level windows in certain locations must be safe if it breaks or protected against breakage, and marked where needed so people can see it. Safety film and manifestation are recognised ways to meet it on existing glass.

Can you cut our logo into frosted film?

Yes. Logos, bands, patterns and lettering can be cut into frosted film for doors, partitions and windows.

Will solar film help with air conditioning?

Cutting the solar heat coming through the glass reduces how hard the cooling has to work in sunny rooms. How much depends on the building, the glass and how much of it faces the sun.

Security film

Does security film stop a break-in?

No film makes glass unbreakable. Security film holds the glass together if it's broken, so getting through takes much longer and is far more difficult. That added time and effort is a strong deterrent.

What's the difference between safety and security film?

Safety film (around 100 micron) holds broken glass together to reduce the risk of injury. Security film is thicker, typically 175 to 350 micron, and is designed to keep the pane in place after repeated blows.

What is frame attachment?

A system that anchors the film to the window frame, not just the glass. It stops the whole sheet of broken glass being pushed in, and is used with thicker security films on higher-risk glass.

Is safety film tested to a standard?

Safety films are tested on glass to impact classes under BS EN 12600. We'll specify a film rated for the location, for example a glazed door or low-level panel.
